Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm

Regular NHS screening clinics helping detect abdominal aortic aneurysms early

NHS AAA Screening at The Lighthouse Clinic

The NHS Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screening Programme invites all men registered with a GP in England for a free ultrasound scan during the year they turn 65. On the Isle of Wight, clinics are held regularly at The Lighthouse Clinic, providing easy local access to this important NHS screening service.

What is an AAA?

An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a swelling in the aorta, the main blood vessel running from the heart through the abdomen. Most AAAs cause no symptoms, but if left untreated, they can become serious. Screening helps detect an aneurysm early before problems develop.

Why Have AAA Screening?

  • Early detection can save lives
  • Most AAAs have no symptoms
  • The scan is quick, painless, and non-invasive
  • Treatment and monitoring are more effective when found early

What Happens During the Scan?

The appointment usually takes around 10–15 minutes and involves a simple ultrasound scan of the abdomen. A trained technician measures the size of the aorta using a handheld scanner, and results are usually given during the same appointment.

The Lighthouse Clinic is proud to support NHS AAA screening services for the Isle of Wight community, helping patients access preventative healthcare closer to home.
