NHS Health Checks at The Lighthouse Clinic and in the community

We are proud to be partnering with the Isle of Wight Council to deliver NHS Health Checks across our island community. Together, we are committed to helping local residents take positive steps towards better health by providing accessible, professional, and preventative healthcare services. We aim to support people in identifying potential health risks early, improving long-term wellbeing, and encouraging healthier lifestyles throughout the Isle of Wight.

The NHS Health Check is a free health check-up for adults in England aged 40-74. It’s designed to help spot early signs of stroke, kidney disease, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, or dementia. As we get older, we have a higher risk of developing these conditions. An NHS Health Check helps find ways to lower this risk.

Everything you need to know about Health Checks

Yes, you may be eligible if you are registered with a GP on the Isle of Wight, have not had an NHS Health Check in the last five years, are not currently prescribed statins to lower your cholesterol, have never had a transient ischaemic attack (TIA) or a stroke, and have not been diagnosed with heart disease, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, high blood pressure (hypertension), atrial fibrillation, or peripheral arterial disease. Meeting all these criteria means you can book a free NHS Health Check.

An NHS Health Check helps to spot early signs of health problems such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, and diabetes. You’ll receive personalised advice on how to stay healthy and active and gain the knowledge and confidence to take control of your health for the future.

During your NHS Health Check, your height, weight, blood pressure, and waist will be measured. You may also have a simple finger prick test to check your cholesterol and blood sugar levels. You’ll be asked about your health, diet, exercise habits, and family medical history, and you’ll receive an assessment of your risk of cardiovascular disease, along with advice on how to reduce it.

After your check, you’ll receive your results and tailored advice on how to lower your risk of developing certain health conditions. This is a great time to make positive changes, such as quitting smoking or increasing physical activity, which can significantly reduce your risk of heart attack, stroke, and cancer, and could add years to your life.
